physics help speed, distance and time?
i have this question that really hard and i dont know what to do. if anyone could answer it oand talk through the stages that would really help.
“a crack in a metal pipe is 0.006m deep inside the pipe. assuming the speed of a sound pulse in the metal is 6500m/s how long would the return echo of the sound pulse take to reach a detector?”
also
“sonar is used to find the depth of water in the middle of the english channel. it takes 0.42 seconds for the sound pulse to travel to the sea bed and return to the detector.a.)how far has the sound pulse travelled?
b.)how deep is the water at this point?
thanks,
t=d/t=0.012/6500=1.846 x 10^-6 s
you will nee the speed of sound in water for the 2nd part

Infrared Detectors and Emitters $296.48 Infrared Detectors and Emitters: Materials and Devices provides an up-to-date view of the various detector/emitter materials systems currently in use or being actively researched. After an introduction to the history of IR detectors and emitters and the assessment methods used in both materials selection and device characterization, a review of detectors and lasers made in IV-VI materials is provided. Metal silicide Schottky IR detectors are then discussed before the emphasis switches to thermal detectors and medium wavelength IR (MWIR) detectors and emitters based on bulk and epitaxial InSb. The ternary system, InAsSb, is then discussed before the current situation in thallium-based III-V compounds, both ternary and quaternary, for IR detectors and emitters for the LW region is summarized. The dominant IR material, particularly in the LWIR region, is still mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) and chapters 10-12 focus on this system and the wide array of detectors and emitters. The final three chapters are devoted to an examination of the challenges to the dominant position of MCT in the LWIR field. The book is aimed at newcomers to the field as well as those already working in the IR industry. The former will find the book readable both as an introductory text and as a useful guide to the literature, while those in industry will find it a valuable overview of the entire field. |

Infrared Detectors and Systems (Wiley Series in Pure and Applied Optics) $190.98 This text covers the range of subjects necessary for the understanding of modern infrared-imaging systems at a level appropriate for seniors or first-year graduate students in physics or electrical engineering. The first six chapters focus on fundamental background issues of radiation detection, beginning with the basics of geometrical optics and finishing with a discussion of the figures of merit used for describing the signal-to-noise performance of a detector system. Other topics include radiometry and flux-transfer issues, basic radiation-detector mechanisms, and random-process mathematics. The presentation then moves on to specific detector technologies and the fundamental mechanisms of detection, paying special attention to responsivity and noise performance. Devices discussed include photovoltaic detectors, photoconductive detectors, thermal detectors, Schottky-barrier diodes, and bandgap-engineered photodetectors via multiple quantum wells and superlattices. The book concludes with a close look at infrared detection systems and related issues. In the discussion of infrared search systems, the range equation is developed in terms of the optical and detector parameters of the system. A separate chapter is devoted to modulation transfer function, a spatial-frequency-domain description of image quality. The final chapter describes the design equations for thermal-imager systems in terms of noise-equivalent temperature difference and minimum resolvable temperature. Supported and clarified by 470 illustrations and accompanied by an extensive glossary of the nomenclature, this is an excellent text for graduate and senior level courses in radiometry and infrared detectors. It is also a valuable reference for practicing engineers involved in the use, design, analysis, and testing of infrared detector-based systems. Infrared Detectors and Systems is a complete, accessible, and timely exposition of a technology whose applications are increasingly important and widespread. Based on courses presented by two of the field’s leading figures, this book provides extensive coverage of the background and fundamentals of radiation detection and goes on to examine specific technologies and systems in depth and, in some cases, for the first time in print. Technologies discussed include * Photovoltaic detectors * Photoconductive detectors * Thermal detectors * Schottky-barrier diodes * Bandgap-engineered photodetectors via multiple quantum wells and superlattices Supplemented with 470 illustrations and a complete glossary of the nomenclature, this is the ideal text for senior- and graduate-level courses in radiometry and optical detection. |

The Lie Detectors $4.48 The story of the lie detector takes us straight into the dark recesses of the American soul. It also leads us on a noir journey through some of the most storied episodes in American history. That is because the device we take for granted as an indicator of guilt or innocence actually tells us more about our beliefs than about our deeds. The machine does not measure deception so much as feelings of guilt or shame. As Ken Alder reveals in his fascinating and disturbing account, the history of the lie detector exposes fundamental truths about our culture: why we long to know the secret thoughts of our fellow citizens; why we believe in popular science; and why America embraced the culture of "truthiness."For centuries, people searched in vain for a way to unmask liars, seeking clues in blushing cheeks, shifty eyes, and curling toes…all the body’s outward signs. But not until the 1920s did a cop with a Ph.D. team up with an entrepreneurial high school student from Berkeley, California and claim to have invented a foolproof machine that peered directly into the human heart. In a few short years their polygraph had transformed police work, seized headlines, solved sensational murders, and enthralled the nation. In Chicago, the capital of American vice, the two men wielded their device to clean up corruption, reform the police, and probe the minds of infamous killers. Before long the lie detector had become the nation’s "mechanical conscience," searching for honesty on Main Street, in Hollywood, and even within Washington, D.C. Husbands and wives tested each other’s fidelity. Corporations tested their employees’ honesty. Movie studios and advertisers tested their audiences’ responses. Eventually, thousands of government employees were tested for their loyalty and "morals" — for lack of which many lost their jobs.Yet the machine was flawed. It often was used to accuse the wrong person. It could easily be beaten by those who knew how. Repeatedly it has been applied as an instrument of psychological torture, with the goal of extracting confessions. And its creators paid a commensurate price. One went mad trying to destroy the Frankenstein’s monster he had created. The other became consumed by mistrust: jealous of his cheating wife, contemptuous of his former mentor, and driven to an early death. The only happy man among the machine’s champions was the eccentric psychologist who went on to achieve glory as the creator of Wonder Woman.Yet this deceptive device took America — and only America — by storm. Today, the CIA still administers polygraphs to its employees. Accused celebrities loudly trumpet its clean bill of truth. And the U.S. government, as part of its new "war on terror," is currently exploring forms of lie detection that reach directly into the brain. Apparently, America still dreams of a technology that will render human beings transparent.The Lie Detectors is the entertaining and thought-provoking |
