Why is so much oil wasted in 1900s prospecting?

I recently watched the film ‘There Will Be Blood’, and it has become one of my favorites. However, there is one thing that annoys me. Why does the derrick shoot oil out at such high speed? Did this happen in real life in the 1900s? If so, why did the Oil Prospector let it go on for so long, wasting so much oil? Surely if it can be stopped, it should be as soon as possible to waste as little ‘Black Gold’ as possible… ?

Hydrocarbons (oil and gas) are extractable because of the amount of pressure in the formation they are produced from. In the old days they didn’t have “blowout preventers” like we do today. So when you drill into a reservoir, the oil starts coming to the surface and if you don’t have something in place to control it, it can get messy. Now, there are so many regulations and requirements to drill, the possibility of these blowouts is much smaller. Once you do have a blowout, though, they are extremely difficult to get under control. The pressure down there can be incredible and sometimes they just had to wait it out until the pressure was controllable.

It is even still used as money – although not officially – by many people…

"An important transitional book, usefully summarizing the past and thoughtfully mapping out the future of a significant critic’s theoretical project." — Modern Philology."There is a much greater emphasis on the reader’s function as `performer’ of the text in Prospecting than in Iser’s other books. The two brilliant chapters on Beckett’s fiction and drama are crucial here… Literature becomes `play’ and `game,’ and the reader becomes a performer of himself. This idea of performance becomes central to Iser’s new theory. Art does not present life; it performs it." — Yearbook of English Studies.
